Fiestas:
On the Costa Blanca,
more than 400 'fiestas' are spread over the entire year. The Fiestas
mostly have a religious origin. Since almost every place has its
own patron saint, once a year, its corresponding figure is carried
through the village in a great procession. In the traditional fishing
villages, for example, Carmen, the patron of the fishermen is honoured
and celebrated on the 16th of June.
The most important festival in Alicante is “Les
Hogueras de San Juan” (St John’s
Bonfires) which is held at the end of June when dozens of monuments
made of wood and papier-mâché are assembled in the streets throughout
the city and, after a fireworks display, all are immediately set
ablaze.
This festival overlaps with the Feast of San Pedro,
featuring colourful processions, fantastic fireworks with live outdoor
music and dancing every night. Another prominent festivity is the
romeria, or pilgrimage, to the neighbouring village of Santa Faz,
held on the second Thursday following the eighth week after Easter
and attracting thousands of "pilgrims".
One of the oldest celebrations in Alicante is
the fiesta of the Moors and Christians where many districts of the
city organise processions which take place during the Summer and
is a fiesta no one should miss. This age-old festivity, commemorating
former Christian battles for the reconquest of these lands from
the Moors, is held with groups from each side parading into the
town arrayed in splendid costume.
In the middle of August one can enjoy the Fiesta Misterio de Elches
(the Mysteries of Elches), which are medieval theatre pieces performed
in a religious celebration manner and take between the 14th and
15th. of August.
